 Skin care experts report that it is estimated that more than 16 million Americans have rosacea, and most of them don’t even know it!
Rosacea is a chronic facial skin condition that is often confused with acne lesions. People with rosacea have inflammation of the nose, cheeks, eyelids, forehead and chin. Rosacea may appear as skin eruptions that are similar to acne or as prominent spider-like blood vessels. It is not uncommon to see redness and swelling on the face, a stinging sensation on the face, or blood-shot eyes during a rosacea outbreak.
The causes of rosacea are largely unknown by the medical community. You are more likely to develop rosacea if you are between 30 and 50 years old, you blush easily, and are fair-skinned. Rosy cheeks are often seen as the glow of health. Unfortunately, it may actually be a serious skin condition. Rosacea affects 14 million Americans, but very few have been diagnosed. Rosacea shows up as a flushing of the face. In the early or pre- rosacea stage, the redness comes and goes quickly. Mild rosacea begins when the face stays flushed for over a half an hour. In moderate rosacea the flushing happens more often and can become permanent in the central part of the face. Broken blood vessels may be visible and small red bumps may appear. Once you are in the severe stage, the person will appear to have a sunburned appearance at all times. Flushing is frequent and uncomfortable. Some people develop an enlargement of the nose.
